Nothing screams evokes an emotion like some old school Rock/Blues. Anybody who calls themselves a fan of Rock can appreciate the roots, and no matter how much the musical scepter has evolved since the Blues, you can still find many great acts around the country that can strike a chord or two. Excited to find new bands all the time that can shed some southern action to kick back too on a casual sundays. Believe it or not Highway 414 are a group from Milwaukee, Wisconsin formed back in 2008. The boys are a tight bunch displaying traditional “high energy” blues with some modern nuances for instance old classics by artists such as Muddy Waters, Albert King and Howlin’ Wolf.

A crucial element of course is the harmonica which adds that grinding soul feeling to most of the songs, tracks like “All Fired Up” and “All Burning ‘ Up” shows this common trait the most. No slouch for the guitar, lead axeman Aaron Oliver dwelles into a roll thundering solo on “Ain’t That Like A Woman”. No doubt shades of Stevie Ray show in bight colors upon listening to “Sorry Sunday (Hangover Blues)” with a traditional slow-grinding blues classic fee. One of the highlights of this “Highway” trip is the song “Bungalow Boogie” a bluesy hard rock speed jam session with a little of funkiness for good measure.

Even if Blues Rock is your thing or just a casual classic rock fiend, you will find a record well done top to bottom, is not groundbreaking as the influences scream loudly but proud, but the classic blues trademark sound is performed on a high level and just a good fun cd to pop in your car and listen to on the highway or a road trip.

The Grascals - The Famous Lefty Flynn's (2010)

The Grascals - The Famous Lefty Flynn's (2010)
EAC Rip | FLAC (Image) + CUE + LOG | 250 MB | + Covers
Genre: Country/Bluegrass | Label: Rounder Records | Catalog Number: 11661-0641-2 | Release Date: Mar 30, 2010 | RAR 5% Rec. | RS.com + HF.com

The Grascals' core — lead vocalist, fiddler, and mandolin player Jamie Johnson, guitarist Terry Eldredge, bass and guitar player Terry Smith, and guitar and mandolin player Danny Roberts — all knew each other as polished sidemen and formed the Grascals to step out front and grab some of the limelight themselves. When Dolly Parton heard the band laying down tracks for their self-titled debut, she hired them to be her backing band. Her vocals on their first single, a bluegrass version of "Viva Las Vegas," helped the song debut at number three on the country charts and earned them an invitation to play the Grand Ol' Opry. The band continues to confound expectations on The Famous Lefty Flynn's by opening the album with a blazing cover of the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville." The track features tasty solos from the two new Grascals, Kristin Scott Benson, IMBA Banjo Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, and fiddler Jeremy Abshire. More traditional cover tunes include the Osborne Brothers oldies "Son of a Sawmill Man" and "Up This Hill and Down." "Sawmill Man" is played at the same breakneck tempo that the Osbornes used with Benson, Danny Roberts and Abshire pulling out all the stops on their solos, while "Up This Hill" has a bluesy ragtime feel and the band's trademark harmonies. Hank Williams, Jr. contributes his rough and rowdy vocals to his dad's "I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome" to complement the band's three-part harmonies. The Grascals step out as songwriters with three solid originals. "Blue Rock Slide" starts out sounding like a traditional mountain tune, just banjo, mandolin, and fiddle playing high lonesome notes before the rest of the band comes in and kicks up the tempo. The title tune is a midtempo prison song full of wry humor, in which the Famous Lefty Flynn gives his cellmate a crash course in crime before he gets shot down during an escape attempt. Johnson's vocal on "My Baby's Waiting on the Other Side" is full of passion and yearning, and lifted to a state of grace by brilliant solos by Abshire, Benson, Eldredge, and Roberts.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the thirteenth studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released in the UK and US in September 1987. In 1985 guitarist David Gilmour began to assemble a group of musicians to work on his third solo album. At the end of 1986 he changed his mind, and decided that the new material would instead be included in a new Pink Floyd album. Subsequently Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright (who had left the group in 1979) were brought on board for the project. Although for legal reasons Wright could not be re-admitted to the band, he and Mason helped Gilmour craft what would become the first Pink Floyd album since the departure of lyricist and bass guitarist Roger Waters in December 1985.

Simon Dupree & The Big Sound - Part Of My Past [2CDs]

Simon Dupree & The Big Sound - Part Of My Past [2CDs]
EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks), No CUE, LOG | 2004 | Scans Included | Time: 77:45 + 73:27 | 987MB | 5% Recovery
Genre: Rock

This is an amazing CD reissue, three times over -- for psychedelic music buffs, British R&B and soul enthusiasts, and fans of the progressive rock band Gentle Giant (which evolved out of Simon Dupree & the Big Sound). And it's also incredibly long overdue. Best-known for their Oriental ersatz pop-psychedelic classic "Kites," Simon Dupree & the Big Sound actually started out as a blues and R&B-based outfit, not too different from the Spencer Davis Group. This double-CD set covers their complete EMI output, most of which has never been reissued, and almost all of which is very impressive (and even manages to intersect obliquely with Apple Records' orbit).

The group's early soul-oriented sides are killers, exciting, totally convincing pieces of British-made R&B that, in the case of "Love" and "Medley: 60 Minutes of Your Love/A Lot of Love," should have placed them head-to-head with the likes of Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group. Even when they move into a slightly trippier sound, on "There's a Little Picture Playhouse," the group still utilizes a basic soul backing. And "Kites," coming along in the middle of the first disc, is such a radical departure from everything before it, that it's astonishing to hear in this context, even knowing the song well -- the rest of the CD is made up of trippy psychedelic ballads with Mellotron accompaniment, often with punchy acoustic rhythm guitars. It's all very pretty and inventive in a pop context, and rivals or surpasses the psychedelic sides of Rainbow Ffolly and most other EMI artists of the era this side of the Beatles and maybe the Move. The highlight of the group's post-"Kites" output was the single "Part of My Past," which was recorded during sessions for what was to have been their second album, Once More Unto the Breach, Dear Friend. That entire unreleased album is here, as the first 16 tracks on Disc Two, and they are a wonder -- the best parts include a gorgeous pop-psych ballad called "What in This World" that doesn't even have a songwriting credit; "Wha Cha Gonna Do," with its "Strawberry Fields Forever" opening and impassioned vocals; the almost-lewd "Don't Make It So Hard (On Me Baby)," with a vocal that was a holdover from the group's soul era; the bouncy, vaguely Bee Gees-like "Kindness"; and the trippy, spacey "Castle in the Sky," one of the finest pieces of psychedelic pop/rock ever to come out of EMI (or, more properly, never to come out from EMI -- until now). The latter should have been another "King Midas in Reverse," but thanks to the failure of "Part of My Past," the whole LP was shelved. The rest of the second disc is comprised of a short string of disappointing pop/rock singles -- vaguely reminiscent of the late-'60s Hollies -- imposed upon the group by their management, concluding with their extrovert rendition of the James Taylor-authored "Something in the Way She Moves Me," backed with a progressive-sounding, organ-heavy B-side, "I'm Going Home," authored by Reginald Dwight in the period before he became Elton John. This is followed by the complete contents of the group's only released LP, Without Reservations, which repeats the same R&B-era singles and B-sides (i.e., their pre-"Kites" work) from Disc One, only in their punchier mono mixes. The remastering is impeccable, the packaging beautifully illustrated with period photos of the band, and thorough annotation by David Wells.
