The album was recorded soon following the release of Dr. Dre's landmark debut album The Chronic (1992), to which Snoop Dogg contributed significantly.
His musical stylizations for the album share similarity to those featured on Doggystyle.Critics have praised Snoop Dogg for the lyrical
"realism" he delivers on the album and for his distinctive vocal flow.While recording the album, Snoop Dogg was arrested in
connection with Phillip Woldermarian's death; he was tried and acquitted in 1996.

one week after another Death Row release, the first posthumous album by slain Tupac Shakur,
the The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which also debuted at number one.

Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told is the third album by Snoop Dogg, his first for No Limit Records. It is Snoop's first not
to be produced by Death Row Records, as well as his first released after his nickname change from Snoop Doggy Dogg.
Da Game debuted #1 on the Billboard 200 Album charts selling over 519,000 copies, and stayed on top for the second
week also by selling additional 246,000 units according to Soundscan thus was quickly certified double platinum
later that year.The album featured mostly No Limit artists and was a departure from Snoop Dogg's
first two albums which were strictly West Coast.

There were two singles releases that were followed by videos for TV promotion.
Although both "From tha Chuuuch to da Palace" and "Beautiful" feature Pharrell,
he was only invited to the latter video shot that took place in Brazil.
They were directed by Bucky Chrome and Chris Robinson respectively,
and also there are two street videos embedded in Snoop Dogg's Boss Playa - a day in the
life of Bigg Snoop Dogg DVD, namely "Boss Playa" and "Pimp Slapp'd", both directed by Pook Brown,
and there's also a third one made for the "That's the Shit", and a fourth one that can be seen in the
Doggystyle porn DVD ("You Like Doin It Too") however these tracks are from the later unreleased project version of the album.
